Earth Day Network Press Conference Calls on U.S. Congress to Pass Climate Legislation by Earth Day 2010

On January 20, Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network, along with Rep. Jay Inslee (WA), Mayor Becker of Salt Lake City, UT and local officials and leaders from the environmental community called on the United States Congress to pass comprehensive climate legislation by Earth Day, April 22, 2010. Denis Hayes, organizer of Earth Day 1970, leaders from the League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation and Greenpeace USA joined Earth Day Network in setting a deadline for federal action against climate change.

The press conference focused on the United States’ opportunity to show leadership in the global marketplace by building a clean energy economy. Speakers called for governmental leadership to help solve climate change, create new green jobs and reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to calling on Congress to pass legislation by April 22, Rogers sought Congress’ adjournment on Earth Day, to meet with their constituents and demonstrate their commitment to passing a climate bill. This action would coincide with Earth Day Network’s Global Day of Conversation, which brings together mayors and locally-elected leaders with their constituents to discuss ways their community can move toward a more sustainable, clean energy economy.

Earth Day Network Greens 40 Schools for 40th Anniversary

Earth Day Network’s Green Schools Campaign is marking the 40th anniversary milestone by organizing school greenings at 40 schools across the country. Greening projects are as diverse as the students and their schools – solar panels on an elementary school in rural Maine, new efficient lighting at a high school in Chicago, even a school garden in the District of Columbia. In addition to greening school facilities, Earth Day Network helps schools integrate classroom upgrades. Combining efficient school buildings with environmental curriculum is a more holistic way to educate ecologically literate students.

Arts for the Earth™ Profile: 360SEE A Gallery of Sustainable Values

Jordan Witkov, in front of 360SEE

Arts for the Earth™, an Earth Day 2010 program, calls on the creative community to be ambassadors for the planet, communicating to their audiences the ever-growing threat of climate change.

Jordan Witkov, Artist for the Earth and director/owner of 360SEE, is hosting an Earth Day 2010 show on April 23. The Chicago gallery exhibits only materials considered to be reusable, recycled or sustainable.

How is it possible to support an entire gallery with sustainable media? “There is a lot of beautiful reclaimed and repurposed material that our artists and designers really love working with,” says Witkov. “Scanning my gallery, I see paintings by Curtis Frillmann done on sheet metal bent into canvases, painted with acrylic enamel and rust. Some people consider it junk, but the materials have been cleaned, repurposed and shown in a really formal way.”

At 360SEE, it is not hard to decipher the values of these artists. It’s written all over the walls.

Jordan Witkov and 360SEE are part of Earth Day Network’s Arts for the Earth™ initiative. In the coming weeks, check out www.earthday.net/artsfortheearth for updates on 3600SEE exhibits and its official Earth Day 2010 exhibition on April 23.

Environmental Youth Advocacy in Nepal

Flag of Nepal

Youth advocacy groups have always played an important role in the United States environmental movement. In 1970, the first Earth Day mobilized over 20 million Americans, many of whom were college students, to rally in support of environmental protection and action. Among those Americans, college students played a key role in organizing Earth Day events. That first Earth Day was part teach-in, part call-to-action and part celebration

This year, Earth Day Network is partnering with the Association of Youth Organizations in Nepal (AYON) and the Nepal Development Fund (NDF) to coordinate events and advocacy programming for Earth Day 2010. AYON is an umbrella group of youth organizations around Nepal who come together for Earth Day. They act as consultants and advocates representing Nepalese youth through advocacy campaigns and leadership training. NDF also plays an active role in Nepal surrounding environmental issues. This year, the three partners plan to coordinate more than 50 Earth Day events nationwide.
