Our World of Wonders, The Eiffel Tower, a Thematic Unit Study

Our World of Wonders, The Eiffel Tower, a Thematic Unit Study.

The information on this page has been adapted from various sources, cited in my “references”, with the main intention of compiling a thematic unit study for young learners through to older students, but essentially providing a one-stop location for parents or educators to obtain everything they need to enhance and successfully complete this unit study with their children. The appropriate ages will depend on “how” the information is presented to the student. For older students with a more advanced vocabulary much of the information can remain very much “as is”. There are even activities for adults, yes it’s true. Try some of the cryptic puzzles as a starter.

This Unit Study examines the How, Why and Where of the Eiffel Tower and provides links and resources, as well as activities for the whole family to enjoy, to enhance your study.

Hopefully my email will be successful this time , I do apologise for dysfunctional and erratic mails – we are working on resolving the technical issues J

You may not care how much I know, but you don’t know how much I care.”

The information is presented language that can be geared towards older or younger students. The language and terminology as is is thus suitable for around Grades 4-5, but with discussion and explanation it is suitable for younger learners. Older learners will be able to study the information and complete the activities with a minimum of assistance. The Activities, Comprehension and Revision exercises are ranged from young learners to older learners.

To cover all elementary age groups I have also included crossword puzzles, word-searches, lesson plans, crafts and activities for the range Pre-K upwards. Particularly for the kindergarten/grades 1-2 age groups I have included squirrel thematic printables that can be used in a classroom theme or Homeschool room setting.

Teaching Guides, Lesson Plans and ideas, as well as the geography, history & location of the very many species of these beautiful creatures, many of which are endangered, have been included.

Simple & healthy snacks and recipes are sure to delight any child (and adult), while riddles, songs and finger plays, Squirrel Games complete the early learning thematic unit. A special section on learning/teaching Haiku is a fun inclusion in this unit.

This book is on the topic of ‘Ants’ with the target audience being those who are 6-13 years old. The project will cover many species of ants, (and a few other bugs), that children have heard of, or that may be particularly interesting to them. A comprehensive unit study, this book comprises lessons, activities and guides which will assist in providing a complete study of ants in their various forms.

Learning about ants is fun! With a little creativity there is no end to the learning opportunities which may be based around the theme of ants. Maybe it’s their amazing societal structure, feats of strength or ability to survive almost anywhere on the planet that have caused children (and many adults!) to be fascinated by ants.

Learners should be encouraged to record observations. Brief descriptions of the appearance and development of insects, the injury they do, and remedies for the same, will help fix in mind facts which otherwise might soon be forgotten. Drawings, whenever possible, should also be required. The learner who can record observations accurately with drawings will not soon forget them. The pages of this book may be printed and kept in a file-folder together with any notes, drawings or observations made by your child. Pages have been included within this unit study for the recording of such information. By making use of a file-folder you will be able to make use of the unit study for reference purposes and also as a gauge in assessment at a later stage.

Just as an aside I collected my daughter from what used to be Durban International Airport before 6 am Monday morning, it was pitch dark and since it is a trip I make more regularly than I care to admit, I thought it odd that it was dark, no planes, no traffic.. helloooooooooooo what’s happening.. only to be re-directed by security there (in the dark(head internally sceaming ummm SECURITY???) – 3 kids sleeping in the car) that uhh- noooooooo all flights have been re-directed to King Shaka International Airport -> some 80 kilometres UP the KwaZuluNatal North Coast – hyperventilating here #RunningOutOfTime… get to VERULAM/TONGAAT PRONTO!

On our way to King Shaka International Airport, which ranks amongst some of the finest I have seen in the world, and let me tell you there have been MANY – we happened to drive right beside the FIFA 2010 Durban World Cup Soccer Stadium as the sun was rising on our right… Could not stop to take pictures, but apparently Portugal (A favourite team my daughter from Dubai – and my reason for this ridiculously long trip – tells me – she says they’re HAWT – is playing there on Sunday… )

Pictures were taken of the stadium from moving car on freeway by Savannah (with cell phone) of Durban WC Soccer Stadium….  South Africa – even though we know these Stadiums are yet to be paid for and the problems that have gone along with getting them fnished – I can say this with all honesty – TODAY I AM PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN!!! Way to Go!!  Will post pics soon as I upload them 🙂

Anyway on to the reason for this post:

The Universe Through A Child’s Eyes

The Universe Through The Eyes Of A ChildThere is something about parenthood that gives us a sense of history and a deeply rooted desire to send on into the next generation the great things we have discovered about life. And part of that is the desire to instil in our children the love of science, of learning and particularly the love of nature.

I’m Learning About Fossils – St Aiden’s Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick

I’m Learning About Fossils – St Aiden’s Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick.

This book which is aimed at kindergarten through 7th grade covers geology, geography, palaeontology, science amidst other lessons in which there is a focus on critical thinking skills, vocabulary, writing skills, comprehension and more.

The study of fossils entails at least five scientific disciplines: earth science, palaeontology, geography, biology, and geology. Each of these disciplines involves a unique content area as well as the development of particular intellectual skills. This unit helps teachers sort and organize the most important ideas in this rich scientific area. Detailed lesson plans serve as ways to pass these ideas on to very young students as well as older students. Comprehensive teacher/parent notes have been included which document in enormous detail the journey of the earth throughout the various Eras or Timelines. Comprehensive activities for learners have been included, and should be adapted to the age of the learner.

Due to the vast amount of information available, we have provided extensive notes in an endeavour to assist the educator in creating lesson plans. While notepages, handouts and activity sheets are included we have not burdened this book with excessive notepages. We would recommend rather that multiple copies be made of the pages required. Lessons should be adjusted and adapted to suit the age of the learner.

The contents of this book enable the educator to prepare lessons for learners from Kindergarden/Grade1 through Grade 7 – even older children. We stress again that every child develops at his or her own pace and whilst some children may find the lessons fairly simple and straightforward other children may require a little more time and explanation. We encourage “children developing at their own pace”. If a lesson appears too complex for a child, it is very easily “downgraded” or simplified to the child’s comfort level of understanding.

Teaching Your Gr1-6 Child Geography – St Aiden’s Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick

Teaching Your Gr1-6 Child Geography – St Aiden’s Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick.

My aim with compiling this book is that as parents and educators, we will get ideas for activities that will use our children’s play to help them learn more  about geography–the study of the Earth.

Most of the suggestions in this book are geared to children from 5 to 12 years of age. Bear in mind, however, that youngsters vary widely in their development, and others–younger and older–may find the activities appropriate.

The activities and games are organised around five specific themes that help focus our thinking:

  1. Where are things located?
  2. What characteristics make a place special?
  3. What are relationships among people and places?
  4. What are the patterns of movement of people, products, and information?
  5. How can the Earth be divided into regions for study?

Each chapter begins with some background and examples of questions that geographers use as they strive to understand the Earth. This is followed by activities to help children learn key ideas.

There are two specific sets of lesson plans. Teaching kindergarten through 3rd grade about maps, which includes 7 lesson plans, 2 activity sheets, and teacher’s information sheet comprising teaching ideas and lesson plan. This section teaches children how to understand and use maps.

Four lessons focus on What Do Maps Show? and combined with the lessons, teaches students basic geographic and cartographic skills.

Included are a selection Notepages, which are ideal for use in Notebooks, Lapbooks, file folders or for use in projects. These pages can be printed out as and when required.

As with the Activity Pages, Maps, Q & A’s etc, please print however many copies of the section you would require. Some of the Activity Sheets and Maps in the Lesson Plans are to be used with a number of the lessons.

Credits and references on appropriate pages and/or are reflected in the credits towards the end of this book.

Illustrations are either sourced from the Public Domain, credited to US Department of Education or from my own collection of Green Label Clipart.

Unit is compiled in A4 and UK English. 135 pages. 13 MB
